Panelists highlighted benefits regular migration provides including legal protection, access to support services, greater safety during travel, and better opportunities for employment and integration in destination countries. Regular migration was presented as a pathway that reduces vulnerability to exploitation and abuse.
For enhanced knowledge about and access to local opportunities, panellists note skills training, food value-addition, food processing, entrepreneurship, agriculture, vocational work, and small business development as viable alternatives that can improve livelihoods without requiring risky migration journeys.
The media’s role in working in partnership with communities in promoting these benefits was emphasised.
