About Migrant Media Action (#MMAct)

We contribute to the media news-making to redefine migration for positive alternatives.

Migrant Media Action (#MMAct) is a r0g_agency initiative implemented in Ghana and The Gambia to improve migration reporting skills of the media and communities. This is aimed towards promoting access of the media and community people to credible information, safe migration options, and alternative livelihoods. #MMAct is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). It is implemented in four regions in Ghana Bono, Central, Northern, and Volta) and four regions in The Gambia (West Coast, North Bank, Upper River, and Lower River)

Core Themes

Literacy in formal migration discourses, policies, and general information

To support communities with credible news about safe migration options, the media first need to be abreast with and understand the debates, concerns, and strategies around national and international migration.

Access to positive alternatives of migration and livelihood

Often lack of access to information on alternative, safe migration options leads to irregular migration. But imagine entering someone’s home compound or room without his permission! This is what irregular migration is.

Freedom of expression on migration experiences

Just because a community-based media does not stop community people from calling into programs is not the only way to understand freedom of expression. It is also about news-making and news sharing sensitivity to cultural, social and communicative values of people.

Creation of and access to credible migration information

The media gains understanding of the drivers of migration behaviour in its communities through research on events that make the news. In this way, migration news becomes relevant and accessible to people because they understand in their contexts.

Our History

Our #MMAct project has evolved from lessons and achievements of the Migrant Media Network (#MMN). In 2020, r0g_agency together with its partners in Ghana and The Gambia successfully completed the Migrant Media Network project, funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. It provided young Africans with reliable information and training on migration and social media topics to make informed migration decisions and be aware of safer migration options to Europe. Following up keenly on the achievements of #MMN, the Migrant Media Action (#MMAct) project implemented in Ghana and The Gambia between October 2025 and March 2027 focuses on enhancing co-creation of credible migration news between the media and communities, for increased access to and literacy in migration news for people.

Media Action

#MMAct’s Media action refers to all programs and activities in which media organisations in our project communities are centrally involved. These include radio shows, media training, and a national media dialogue. The media leads in organising these events, but co-develops with # MMAct country teams, communities, and allied stakeholders.
